Two Sides of the Same Coin

A few months ago Yahoo did a story about a billboard that was displayed in India for a skin bleaching cream. The company selling the product also provided us with the option to go on their website & upload a photo of ourselves so we can all see how much more amazing we will look with our skin lightened. How generous of them. So it’s pretty obvious that India has a serious “color complex”.

Now 80 percent of the commenters on Yahoo were “shocked & appalled” by the blatant self hate being perpetrated by this “evil” company. My question is: why is it OK to tan, but NOT OK to bleach? Both are considered risky. Both are done for beauty purposes. Why don’t we accuse tanners of being “color struck” when they and some onions, garlic and pepper are wrapped in aluminum & left to cook in the sun for hours until the toothpick inserted comes out clean? I really don’t see the difference.

My brain know it’s the same thing. So why do I get so upset when I hear people bleach their skin? Things that make you go hmmm?
